We are recruiting – new trustees

Yoga in prison: a teacher and officer with arms above heads in a yoga pose.Do you have a passion for helping prisons support the rehabilitation of people in their care – and their reintegration into society?  Prison yoga charity The Prison Phoenix Trust is seeking new trustees to join our Board.

Who we are

We are an award-winning yoga charity in the UK and Ireland, with 37 years’ experience sharing meditation and yoga with people in prison. We offer personal support to prisoners and prison staff through teaching, mentoring, peer-support and specialist resources. We work with people of any faith or none, honouring all recognised religions. For people in prison we bring hope, healing and support for reintegration into society.

Who we need

We are looking for people who understand and support the aims and principles of The PPT to share responsibility for the strategic direction and governance of the charity. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with:

  • lived experience of the prison environment – those who have served a prison sentence or who have worked in prisons
  • a legal qualification, for example a specialism in charity law, able to provide legally informed guidance as issues arise
  • a particular interest in prevailing government, political, media and cultural debate around prison policy, monitoring and providing the Board with informed reporting of the current landscape
  • demonstrable experience and knowledge of charity fundraising strategy including an understanding of trusts, foundations and private donors

Time commitment

Charity trustees’ involvement includes quarterly Trustees meetings, usually on Tuesday evenings, in Oxford or online, with attendance in person encouraged at least once per year; annual strategy day with the staff team; annual public event; ad hoc committee work. You will be joining a friendly team of Trustees, volunteers and paid staff to help support a unique and effective organisation that offers hope and support to people who live and work in prison.

Deadline for applications

30 April 2025 with interviews in May at times and dates to be agreed with candidates.
